April 2006 saw the start of our first job as Destroy All Monsters, the film adaptation of Philip Pullman's Northern Lights - or The Golden Compass as the book was known in the U.S. The first in a triology of books, known collectively as His Dark Materials, The Golden Compass explores complex themes such as religion, love, life and death but in a fantasy setting which makes it perfect for older children and adults alike. We were charged with designing many different scenes from the film, including huge battle scenes, interaction between animal and human characters and shots involving multiple CG elements.
